BLUE MOON CAFE - 09/12/2011
Blue Moon Cafe is located at 1621 Aliceanna St in the Fells Point area of Baltimore city. It is a breakfast restaurant that has built almost a big following over the years. It was opened in 1996 & has since been helping Baltimore's residents as well as tourists indulge in great food made with fresh ingredients. The owner, per Blue Moon's Website www.bluemoonbaltimore.com , imparts her Rock 'n Roll spirit into her menu & every bite of food she cooks. After appearing on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives", The Blue Moon Cafe has become a "Must Visit" for Marylanders & Tourists alike.
I first heard of Blue Moon Cafe back in 2003 while working at Babalu Grill as a Server/Bartender. A couple of my co-workers had mentioned eating there after work (around 4am) & the food being amazing. The Blue Moon Cafe is open from 7am - 3pm on weekdays but opens back up at 11pm on Friday & Saturday nights & stays open all night. Even though I had heard about the food I never really got around to actually going to eat there. That is until today! After I saw the episode of the "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" I knew this was a restaurant I had to visit. The main reason you ask??? CAP'nCRUNCH Cereal is my FAVORITE Cereal & Blue Moon Cafe's signature dish - CAP'nCRUNCH French Toast!!!!! You read that correct, I typed CAP'nCRUNCH French Toast. If you are anything like me, just the sound or sight of those words makes my mouth water, drool, & a sound very similar to Homer Simpson craving a donut comes up from my vocal chords & out of my mouth. Seeing that episode, I honestly think I lost 5 pounds from drool alone (Sorry if thats gross, but I LOVE FOOD & for me it is a normal reaction). So seeing that it was my birthday & my parents were in town I decided we should make today the day to try it out.
We arrived at roughly 1:45pm. The Cafe was seat yourself. I was accompanied by my wife, my 3 1/2 yr old daughter, & my parents. The restaurant has roughly about 7 tables (Atleast in the front room, don't know if there was additional seating elsewhere). Very small & quaint. The restaurant was decorated with color paintings on one wall & sketches/art for sale on the other wall. They all had price tags on them. We were welcomed in with a polite hello & smile. There were two waitresses working & 4 tables seated at the time. Both waitresses came by our table within 5 minutes of each other, letting us know they would be right back with water & to take our orders. Normally in a regular restaurant each server has their own section, usually consisting of 3-4 tables. But these two seemed to be working all the tables together making it very comfortable & easy to ask questions or for something you might need. They were very friendly & accommodating. I actually over heard one waitress telling another table about another restaurant they should try & even told them she would look up the address & phone number for them.
The menu is all breakfast food. Not to big, not to small. The waitress came over with our water & started to tell us about the specials. First, the CAP'nCRUNCH French Toast. Second, the SWEET BABY JESUS. It is a breakfast dish with eggs cooked to your liking, crab meat, cheese, & hollandaise sauce served over hash browns. An old co-worker of mine said this was her favorite dish. Third, the Breakfast Nachos. Tortilla chips topped with spicy chorizo (mexican sausage, I love it), black beans, salsa verde (green), regular salsa, shredded cheese, jalepeno, 2 eggs cooked to your liking, & lettuce. My father ordered the Breakfast Nachos while the rest of us ordered the CAP'nCRUNCH French Toast. The food came out quickly. We waited maybe 7-10 minutes after we placed our order.
First up - CAP'nCRUNCH FRENCH TOAST
What can I say, they were awesome! Perfectly cooked, crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside. Not to sweet, at the same time did not need syrup. Eaten with the banana & whipped cream was the best taste. It definitely lived up to all the hype & expectations I have had.
Second Dish - BREAKFAST NACHOS
I have to say, I was surprised, no.....stunned, no......UTTERLY SHOCKED after trying this dish. In terms of taste, one word describes it.......PERFECT!!!!! This dish stole the show. It was (can't believe I am saying this) better than the french toast. It was spicy, crunchy, savory, & everything else you can think of. The crunch from the chips & lettuce, the spice from the chorizo-salsas-jalepenos, & all tied together with the runny yolks from the sunny side up eggs. I mean this dish was AMAZING. Now the spice for me was perfect. For some it might be too hot. Just ask my dad who was sweating after about 4 bites...haha. Also the portion size was huge. It could easily be shared with another person.
All in all it was a good experience. I thought the food had good flavor, was cooked properly, came out to the table timely, & the service good. I think if there was maybe one more server or possibly a bus boy helping, the waitresses probably would have been a little more personable & attentive, but having worked as a server before I understand the business & do not knock them for hustling to take care of all the tables. I would definitely recommend going to the Blue Moon Cafe. I know I will be going back ready to try some other dishes on the menu. Considering the type of food they serve, & comparing it to other places of similar food (i.e diners & drive-ins) I would give Blue Moon Cafe 4 out of 5 stars in the "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" category!
